[Bulma] Como reiniciar proftpd debian

Hola a todos los del foro

Estimado amigo estoy montando un servidor ftp con proftpd en Linux debian 2.6.18-5-686

ProFTPD Version 1.3.0

no  puedo reiniciar el proftpd me sale el siguiente error, que parámetro me falta para que se reinicio o se pare

debian:/etc/init.d# proftpd restart
 - unknown parameter: 'restart'

verifique que este corriendo
debian:/etc/init.d# ps ax |grep proftpd
 4371 pts/1    R+     0:00 grep proftpd

efectivamente esta corriendo, entoces como lo reinicio o lo paro siempre vota el mismo mensaje - unknown parameter: 'restart'
 
segun la ayuda muestra esto
debian:/etc/init.d# proftpd --help
usage: proftpd [options]
 -h, --help
     Display proftpd usage
 -N, --nocollision
     Disable address/port collision checking
 -n, --nodaemon
     Disable background daemon mode (and send all output to stderr)
 -q, --quiet
     Don't send output to stderr when running with -n or --nodaemon

     Set debugging level (0-10, 10 = most debugging)
 -D [definition], --define
     Set arbitrary IfDefine definition
 -c [config-file], --config

     Support IPv6 connections
